The Fox and the Raven’s Song

Once upon a time, in a lush, green forest, there lived a clever fox named Felix. Felix was known far and wide for his cunning tricks and sharp mind. One sunny morning, as Felix trotted through the forest, he spotted something shiny in the distance. It was a beautiful, shimmering piece of cheese, held tightly in the beak of a majestic raven named Rocky.

Rocky, with his glossy black feathers, was perched high on a branch of an old oak tree. Felix’s mouth watered at the sight of the cheese. He knew he had to have it, but how?

“Good morning, Rocky!” called Felix with a friendly wave of his bushy tail.

Rocky looked down, suspicious but curious. “Good morning, Felix. What do you want?”

“Oh, nothing much,” replied Felix casually. “I was just passing by and couldn’t help but notice what a splendid piece of cheese you have there. It looks delicious!”

Rocky puffed out his chest proudly. “Indeed, it is. And it’s all mine!”

Felix knew Rocky wouldn’t give up the cheese easily. But Felix had a plan. He remembered that Rocky loved to show off his voice, even though everyone in the forest knew his singing was…well, let’s just say it was less than melodious.

“Rocky,” said Felix, tilting his head to the side, “I’ve heard tales about your magnificent singing voice. I’ve never had the pleasure of hearing it myself. Could you possibly sing a little song for me?”

Rocky blinked in surprise. No one had ever complimented his singing before. He was so flattered that he forgot all about his cheese. “You really want to hear me sing?”

“Absolutely!” Felix said, nodding enthusiastically. “I’ve heard you’re the best singer in the entire forest!”

Feeling quite proud, Rocky cleared his throat and began to sing. “CAW! CAW! CAW!”

Felix tried not to laugh as the awful sound echoed through the forest. He kept his eyes on the cheese, waiting for the right moment. Rocky, so engrossed in his performance, didn’t notice that his beak had started to open wider and wider.

Suddenly, with a final “CAW!”, the cheese slipped from Rocky’s beak and tumbled down, down, down—right into Felix’s waiting paws.

“Thank you, Rocky!” said Felix, grinning from ear to ear. “That was…quite a performance!”

Rocky finally realized what had happened. “Hey! My cheese!”

But it was too late. Felix had already scampered off with the cheese in his mouth, his laughter echoing through the trees. Rocky flapped his wings in frustration but couldn’t help but chuckle at himself. “Well, Felix, you got me this time.”

From that day on, Rocky was more careful with his precious treats. And Felix? He enjoyed every last bite of that delicious cheese, always on the lookout for his next clever trick.

And so, in the forest, the story of the fox and the raven’s song was told and retold, reminding everyone to be cautious when a clever fox was around.
